Nitai Mehta, founder and trustee of Praja Foundation, said, “The double burden of malnutrition is clearly seen in Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) schools. According to the report, 32 deaths were reported in 2017 due to protein-energy malnutrition among children aged 0-19 years.
Growing child malnutrition in municipal schools should be a cause for immediate concern for two reasons. Firstly, it shows the inadequacy of municipal schools in serving the needs of the economically weaker sections of society, whom they seek to target. Secondly, as children are the future of our country, it means that we may be frittering away our large demographic dividend. The Intervention in terms of Finger Foods which are nutritive as well as taste acceptable is key to combat this concern.
Poshan Positive Nutripack (food supplements containing finger foods and snacks from nutrient-rich grains and pulses approved under FSSAI certification standards), which shall supplement 80% of RDA(Recommended Dietary Allowance), on the growth of malnourished children.
