Rang Barse – Why we celebrate with colours?

The Tale and Legends of Holi Festival

Holi, the festival of Colours or let’s say the play of colours, is celebrated in different corners of India on the full moon day of Phalgun.

We celebrate Holi for 2 consecutive days. Chhoti Holi or Holika Dahan is a ritual pyre (on day one) to signify the victory of good over evil. This is when Holika, a demoness, tried to kill Prahlad by putting him to fire in previous ages. While, on the second day, Rangwali Holi (in honour of Sri Krishna, popularly celebrated in Mathura) is observed with much fanfare.

The science behind the festival

Ancient India was fully aware of the benefits of the fragrant natural colours for our skin and health and also their therapeutic value. Let’s delve into the science behind it.

 The Holika Pyre

Holi marks the beginning of the Spring Season, between the end of winter and the beginning of summer. Thus, this transition period induces the growth of bacteria in the atmosphere and the body. While the tradition of performing circumambulation (go around the bonfire) with the heat, kills the bacteria in the body.

The Play of Colors

Colours play an essential role in the fitness of the human body. Hence, colour elements provided either through diet or medicine can cure a disease caused due to a particular colour deficiency. Natural sources like turmeric, Neem and Palash (Tesu), etc., produce beautiful powdered dyes. The playful throwing of colour powders made from natural sources strengthen the ions. Thus, these colours invite a healing impact on the human body.

Toxicity in Synthetic Colours

Holi is quickly approaching, and while we are delighted about the holiday, there is also concern about artificial colours and the irreversible damage can cause to the body and to the environment. These colours induce allergies, skin irritation, and dryness. People use these colours because they are widely available and inexpensive.
