The history of games dates to the ancient human past. Games are an integral part of all cultures and are one of the oldest forms of human social interaction. Games are formalized expressions of play which allow people to go beyond immediate imagination and direct physical activity.

These board games are created by the rural artist of Saharanpur, UP.

The world knows the ill-effects that phone and TV screens can have on young children. That is why we “Bridge For Artisans “and “The Indian Spirit” came with a range of Chess so that you can have fun and improve your skills at the same time and it will also provide a livelihood to various artisans from various parts UP.

How to Play!

The Equipment

One chess board – with a playing field consisting of 64 squares, which is sometimes annotated with letters and numbers along the sides. Two sets of 16 chess pieces (chessmen) – consisting of one king, one queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights, and eight pawns. The darker colour pieces and squares are referred to as black, and the lighter white.

Setup

The board is arranged into eight rows of squares and eight columns, with the lower-left corner on both sides a black square. Set the pieces according to the illustration below.

Gameplay

Knowing how the pieces move is essential to playing the game. When your piece lands on the other player’s occupied square, their piece will be removed and considered captured. The movement path must be clear for a piece to move with the exception of the Knight, which can move over other pieces.

King – The king is the most important piece in the game and also the weakest. The king can move in any direction but only one space at a time. The game is lost if it is captured.

Queen – the Queens, are the most powerful pieces and can move in any direction any number of squares.

Rook – Rooks can move horizontally or vertically any number of squares

Bishop – Bishops can move diagonally any number of squares.

Knight – Knights move in an “L” shape, either two squares horizontally and one square vertically, or two squares vertically and one square horizontally. Knights are the only pieces that can pass over other pieces that are in their movement path.

Pawn – Pawns can only move forward, unlike other pieces. Normally it moves only one square at a time except on its first move where it has the option to move up to two squares. Pawns cannot capture other pieces in front of them. However, if there is a piece one square diagonally forward of them, it can move in that direction to capture it. If a pawn manages to reach the other end of the board, it is promoted to a queen.

Castling – This is a special move-in Chess that involves both a rook and the king. In this move, the king is moved two squares towards the rook, and the rook moves to the square through which the king passed. This occurs all within one turn.

Check – Check is a term in Chess when a player’s king is attacked and put in the position of being captured within one more move. A check cannot be ignored, and a player must stop the threat by doing one of the following:

– Capture the checking piece by using the king or any other piece that can capture the checking piece.

– Blocking the checking piece to protect the king.

– Move the king to a square which is not under threat.

Checkmate – also known as ‘Mate’ is when a player’s king is checked and cannot get out of being captured. Giving checkmate to your opponent is the primary goal in Chess: a player who receives the checkmate loses the game.

Basic Strategy

– Gain control of the centre of the board, as this will allow your pieces to move more freely and deny the other player as much room to move.

– Create threats with your moves. If you are on offence, they need to think defence. – Try not to move the same piece twice in a row. This slows down your tempo and allows your opponent an opportunity to outpace you.

– Keep your king safe and unexposed to danger.

Game Paraphernalia – 

1 game board, 2 sets of 16 counters (total 32)

Game Setup – 

• Each player gets an army of 16 soldiers or sepoys. They are placed only on intersections of lines (fig 1).
• After placing both the armies game board will look like fig 2.

Rules to play – 

• During a turn only one counter has to move to an adjacent point which is connected to its current point by line. It can move in any direction (fig 3). 
• If a point is not connected to its present point by a direct line, the counter cannot move there (fig 3).  
• If counter comes in front of an opponent counter which has an empty point behind it in the same line, then the counter jumps over to the empty-point and captures the opponent counter. (Fig 4)
• The counter can jump over multiple opponents during its turn provided it always lands on an empty-point before jumping over the next opponent (fig 5). There is no limit for a counter to capture its opponent’s counters in a single turn.
• A counter cannot jump over an opponent if there is no empty point behind the opponent (fig 6), not even to capture an opponent (fig 7).
• A counter cannot jump over an empty point at any time not even to capture a counter (fig 6)
• A counter cannot change its direction while capturing (fig 8) however after capturing; it can change its direction to capture another counter (fig 5)
• A captured counter is permanently out of the game. 

Winner:

The player who has captured all counters of the opponent is the winner.

Game Setup – 

• Each player gets an army of 9 soldiers. They are placed only on intersections of lines (fig 1). In the beginning, all the counters are placed on the board (fig 1).

Rules to play – 

• During a turn, only one counter has to move to an adjacent point which is connected to its current point by line or by an arc. It can move in any direction and even on the arcs of the circle (fig 2). 
• If a point is not connected to its present point by a direct line or by an arc, the counter cannot move there (fig 2). 
• If counter encounters a lone opponent counter which has an empty point behind it (in the same line or arc), then the counter jumps over to the empty-point and captures the opponent counter. (fig 3)
• The counter can jump over multiple opponents during its turn provided it always lands on an empty-point before jumping over the next opponent (fig 4). There is no limit for a counter to capture its opponent’s counter in a single turn.
• A counter cannot jump over an opponent if there is no empty point behind the opponent (fig 5). A counter cannot jump over an empty-point, not even to capture an opponent (fig 6).
• A counter cannot change its direction while capturing (fig 7) however after capturing, it can change its direction to capture another counter (fig 4)

Game Paraphernalia – 

1 game board, 2 sets of four counters (total 8)

Goal or Objective – 

To bring one’s four counters in a straight line.

Game Setup – 

• Initially board will be empty. There are 13 points where two or more lines are intersecting each other. Counters have to be placed only on these points (Fig 1).
• To begin with, players place each of their counters alternatively on any of the empty points on the board such that Each player tries – 
  1.  To have all his four counters in a line and  
  2.  Block the opponent from forming a line of four with his counters.

Rules to Play –

• After all counters are placed on the board, they start moving. A player can move only one counter during his turn. This movement is from its present point to its immediate next point (provided it’s empty) which is joined by a line to the current point (Fig 2).
• A Counter cannot jump over any point. It cannot move to a point which is not directly connected by a line (Fig 3).
• A counter cannot move to a point which is preoccupied. Counter cannot jump over any counter. There is no capturing of opponent’s counter (Fig 4)

Winner –  

• One who brings all his four counters in a line the winner (fig 5)
• In case neither player can make a line but one player has blocked movement of the opponent’s entire counter (fig 6) is the Singham game winner.

• A counter cannot change its direction while capturing (fig 9) however after capturing; it can change its direction to capture another counter (fig 5)
• A captured counter is permanently out of the game. 

Winner-

The player who has captured all counters of the opponent is the winner of Nau Keti Keta Game.

How to Play!

Game Paraphernalia – 

1 game board, 18 game pieces. 3 of which are tigers and the remaining 15 are goats.

Game Setup – 

• All goats have to be introduced on the board before a goat can start moving. (fig 1)
• 3 Pawns (either tigers or goats) should be placed only on intersections of lines.

Rules to play – 

• The goats must move according to these rules: They must leave the board when captured. They cannot jump over the tigers or other goats. They can only move after all 15 have been put on the board.
• The tigers must move according to these rules: They can start capturing goats in any moment after the match has started. They can capture only one goat at a time. They can jump over a goat in any direction.(fig 2)
• But the direction must be to an adjacent intersection following any of the lines drawn on the board. A tiger cannot jump over another tiger.

How to Win

• Tigers win if they take out at least 6 goats.
• Goats win if they immobilize all three tigers.
• The goat objective is to encircle the tigers so that none of the tigers can move. The tiger objective is to kill all the goats.

Tip & Tricks

• At the start of the game, all 3 tigers are placed on the apex, and 2 inner places closest to the apex. All goats start off the board.
• The player controlling the goats moves first by placing a goat onto a free intersection on the board. Then it is the tiger’s turn. One tiger is then moved to an adjacent position along the lines that indicate the valid moves.
• A tiger captures a goat by jumping over it to an adjacent free position (like in checkers). The goats can not move until all 15 have been put on the board.
